Morris Mens club | History

Morris Rugby Football Club was founded in September 1977 through the efforts of Rich Cecchetti and Gane Piwowar. With growing interest in the sport it was necessary to found new clubs, so as not to overcrowd the existing ones. Many of the early members were solicited from the local colleges as well as many local Morris corporations. Joining the Metropolitan New York Rugby Football Union in 1978, Morris has grown to a size of 50+ players, an Old Boys team and a women's team. More recently, the men's club membership has included people from many different areas of the world including England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada. At present we compete in Met New York Division 2.

In 1982 Morris RFC founded and continues to host the Annual State Championship, Jersey Cup. We also participate in many other tournaments each year such as Washington Irish St. Patrick's Day, Rockaway Long Island, Monmouth, Baltimore Rites Of Spring, Saranac Lake and many Seven's Tournaments such as New York and Rockaway.

Morris RFC has long been involved with a variety of off field events as well. Work has been done with local high schools and universities to teach and promote the sport. We also have a club blood drive at Morristown Memorial Hospital twice a year. We have an affiliation with New York's USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, providing volunteer labor to paint the deck every year. In return Morris RFC holds a fundraiser party aboard ship each August. A percentage of the proceeds from the fund raiser go to local and national charities each year.

In 1988, The Morris Rugby Corporation was incorporated as a New Jersey nonprofit organization, with Michael Stumpf as its Chairman. The Corporation seeks to provide a structure in which rugby and other amateur sports can be developed in the New Jersey area, combining athletic excellence with community service. Future plans call for the acquisition and development of permanent club house and field facilities.
