U19 Boys win 3 Sevens Tournaments
07/27/10- 07/27/12
We have started a new tradition at Morris Rugby. We now have U19 Sevens program. This year the team consisted of five Delbarton and five Morris Rugby kids. These kids spent the last four weeks dominating the U19 brackets of the three tournaments they entered.
12-0 with 3 championships They played a combined total of 12 games in those tournaments, winning all 12! In those 12 games they scored 432 point and only gave up only 49. The most satisfying victory being at the Surfside 7’s tournament held at Stone Harbor, NJ. The U19 bracket consisted of 14 teams that included several Collage freshmen level teams. Kutztown was the favored to win the tournament. The boys beat Kutztown by a score of 29 to 5.
The most impressive part about this program is how it was conceived and implemented. This was the brainchild of Jake Feury, son of Tom Feury. Jake, started playing in the inception of flag program over ten years ago. He now plays for Morris and Delbarton’s U19 15s program. He saw the need for this program to get off the ground after seeing the college sevens rugby series.
First he discussed the possibility of starting the program with his brother Blaze and a few friends to make sure the interest was there. Once he was confident he could get the players he needed he begin to think about a suitable coach. Jake discussed it with his dad. Tom knew I had some experience playing and coaching sevens in the past, suggested me as the coach (thank you).
With coach and players now in place he needed to find tournaments. Jake took the time and researched all the tournaments in the area. Then requested the needed amounts to enter the tournaments from the players. He collected all the money and paid for all the tournaments himself.
I just want to point out this was done with no financial assistance from the Morris Corporation.
The boys are already in the planning stage for doing this again next year. The interesting thing is that all the boys we had this year will still be eligible to play in the U19 sevens program next year. My hope is that maybe next year we might have two teams. Possibly having a Delbarton and a Morris team. Next year I would like to see us enter more of the NRU qualifiers so that those coaches at the USA Rugby level can see the boy’s talents, and they do have talent for this game!
I would like to give special thanks to the Men’s program for letting the boys scrimmage with them after our training session. Playing the men defiantly made to the boys better sevens players. I’d also like to thank Neil Hogan who came and shared his knowledge of the game. I would also like to thank Tom Feury for recommending me to the boys as a coach and also being there every weekend and helping and coaching with me.
I would not be surprised if we see some of these boys playing in the 2016 Olympics!!
