Quad Rugby at Drew University
Morris Rugby and the Drew University Rugby Clubs will present an afternoon of Quad Rugby. The exhibition will take place on Saturday, September 22 between 12:00 and 5:00 p.m. at the Simon Forum and Athletic Center on the Drew University campus in Madison, NJ.
All admission costs will be used to offset the expenses incurred by the athletes and referees participating in this event.
Quad Rugby is a cross between wheelchair basketball, ice hockey and soccer, and is played on a regulation-size basketball court with minor changes. Four players compete on each side of the court with each player being classified according to the level of their mobility impairment and assigned a point value for their classification. At all times, the sum of the classifications competing on each side can total no more than 8.0 points. The game consists of passing a volleyball back and forth while advancing into the opponent's half of the court. Scoring occurs when the opposing team crosses over the goal line with the volleyball.
For some of these athletes, Quad Rugby provides an outlet for their competitive spirit. For others, it is the chance to have some exercise and socialize with their teammates and opponents.
Participants will come from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region to engage in a round robin tournament. At the conclusion of the tournament, spectators will be invited to trade their bleacher seat for a wheelchair seat and the chance to test their abilities. Come on out and cheer them on, or maybe have a roll at it yourself!
